If I Could Give You One Thing in Life…
If you were to walk up to someone that you know and tell them that you’re going to start putting yourself first in your life, they would likely look at you as though you’re either selfish, insane, or both. There seems to be a stigma attached to showing kindness to oneself. Does putting yourself first make you selfish? Is loving yourself really such a bad thing?
Contrary to popular belief, loving yourself first does not mean that you completely disregard others in order to get what you think is best for you. Telling a lie about a coworker in order to eliminate competition for the promotion you want is not what it means to put yourself first. Rather, it means that you make sure that you take the time to care for yourself and your own needs. It means that you learn to love and respect yourself as much as you do those around you.
It isn’t hard to do something special for yourself. It’s as simple as buying that special brew of coffee that you love because you’ve earned it after a crazy workweek. Or perhaps setting aside a certain amount of time each day to work on that hobby you have wanted to start for so long, but never felt that you had enough time.Treating yourself is not selfish. Everybody deserves to be happy and nobody should ever feel bad about doing things that they enjoy.
More important than treating yourself is taking care of yourself. Life gets very hectic very quickly. Before long you realize you haven’t been to the gym in months, you’ve started eating fast food because it’s easy to grab while you’re on the run, and you don’t even know when you last had a routine check-up with your health care provider. People who work out regularly and maintain their health have more energy and are happier overall. Simple things like walking once a day and choosing to eat meals at home more often can add many years and satisfaction to your life.
When you take the time to love yourself, you’re benefiting those around you as much as yourself. Think about it for a moment. Would you rather spend your day with someone who was happy or with someone who was stressed and irritable? It seems like a simple answer. Being able to rely on yourself for happiness will ensure that you are always ready and able to share that happiness with everyone around you.
Loving yourself first is not about being selfish. It’s about loving yourself so that you can care and love those around you more effectively. Just as you would give a friend or family member a gift, you should give yourself things that you enjoy. If you could give your good health to a sick friend or family member, you would;so why not do what it takes to make yourself healthy? Everybody wants to be loved, so start by loving yourself.
